"It's all about identifying a gap in the market, even if there’s no
market, or even people buying things."
The Pavement is a small new charity, founded in the spring of 2005,
that provides a unique product - a free monthly paper for homeless readers.
The Pavement delivers 3,000++ copies to over 30 outlets across London:
hostels, day-centres, homeless surgeries, soup-runs and libraries. By
using volunteer journalists and professionals, as well as work from the
country's best cartoonists (many of them Private Eye contributors),
we’ve achieved a balance of news, features, humour and service listings
unique to our publication. From autumn 2007, the magazine will also be
distributed in Scotland (with news tailored to a Scottish readership),
and we are planning to expand to provide national coverage.
Our journalists are all professional, and cover the news from the streets
or news affecting the streets. We often deal with topics ignored by the
mainstream press.
Alongside the news, other professionals provide features on health,
foot care, legal advice and life in hostels, with the back pages given
over to The List, a monthly updated directory of local services, also
available to download here.
We’ve some exciting projects planned, from a death
registration telephone line to co-ordinate caring for the dead, to the
world’s first homeless superhero comic strip (in the mould of Modesty
Blaise or Garth). We'll be launching a database-driven site soon so that
readers can search more easily for services.
As always, we welcome comment, so do get in
touch.
