In England and Wales, passers by can ‘report’ homeless people to Street Link, providing details so the charity’s outreach workers can find them.

But now members of the public in New York can now upload a photo of a person sleeping rough and pin it to an online map.

The controversial tool, entitled NYC Map the Homeless, says it aims to allow the authorities to “quickly identify locations of concern and act in a timely manner”

Users can also add tags, such as #sleeping, #aggressivebegging and #needsmedicalaid.
