Super-sized YMCA

May 23rd 2009
The Earl of Derby recently opened the Liverpool YMCA after its £5m reconstruction. With 40 en suite rooms and 30 self-contained flats, the new 'super hostel' can accommodate and support the development needs of up to 70 homeless people. Although the YMCA does not estimate the number of rough sleepers in Liverpool, its few remaining vacant beds suggests the 15 documented in April's official head count could be inaccurate. This development follows the rebuild of Birkenhead YMCA in 2007. Cosmopolitan Housing Group said it would like to build in other cities, but has yet to receive any proposals.
