Glasgow hosts World Cup

Around 100,000 spectators are expected to turn up in July

The Homeless World Cup 2016 will be held in Glasgow.

The city’s George Square will be converted into an outdoor street football venue, with three purpose-built pitches and seating.

The free event will run for seven days from Sunday 10 to Saturday 16 July. It is expected that around 100,000 spectators will attend the World Cup in Glasgow.

Over 60 teams representing 51 countries will come to Glasgow, with a total of 512 players to celebrate and highlight the year-round and life-changing work of the Homeless World Cup National Partner Network.

The 2016 World Cup is the?14th edition of the tournament.?The tournament was last held in Scotland in 2005 and was won overall by Italy. Mel Young, president of the Homeless World Cup Foundation, who is from Edinburgh said: “This is significantly more than a football tournament; it’s a real celebration of optimism.

"We will have 512 players with us, and every single one of them is at some stage of their journey towards a more stable future.”
