Russians shelter in sewers

March 14 2016
A Moscow winter is no time to be outside, but...

Homeless people in Russia’s capital, Moscow, are being forced to find retreat from the harsh winter in sewers, according to a Sky News report.

Natalya Markova, from the Moscow charity Friends On The Street, told the news outlet: “The last census says there are around 6,000 homeless in Moscow, but I think the real number is much higher.”

Russia has been seriously hit by the economic crisis, prompted in large part by the fall in the price of its biggest export – oil. It’s estimated that 2.3 million Russians fell into poverty in the first nine months of 2015.
