Simon Community head count

September 26 2009
November numbers up by a fifth The Simon Community has found 332 rough sleepers in central London; a rise of 21 per cent on their last count. The count, conducted in the early hours of 11th November, was carried out in the eight inner London Boroughs of Westminster, City, Southwark, Camden, Lambeth, Tower Hamlets, Kensington and Chelsea and Islington, and numbers were up from the last count in March 2006 (275 in the same area). However, the DCLG (Department for Communities and Local Government) calculated that there are only 502 rough sleepers in England, with 267 of these in London. Philip Burke, a spokesman from the Simon Community, said: "Our concern is that this figure is just the tip of the iceberg. Like the government count, we were only able to count those who were visible, not those who sleep in parks, disused buildings or squats. What this count highlights is that since the government figures were produced in June, there has been a rise again in numbers of people sleeping out on London's streets."
