Homeless Leith man fails to become councillor

June 15 2012
Irvine McMinn wants to highlight issues affecting people in his position

Irvine McMinn, a candidate at the 2012 local authority elections, attempted to become the country’s first homeless person to win an electoral seat. Living without permanent accommodation since the age of 16, the 56-year-old was unsuccessful this time round.

Standing for the little-known Liberal Party, a breakaway from the merger that created the Liberal Democrats in the 1980s, Irvine polled 1.1 per cent of first preference votes in the Leith ward, the second best of all his party’s candidates in the city.

Prior to May’s election, Irvine said: “Even if I don’t get elected myself perhaps I can highlight the issues affecting people in my position.” As a well-known face in Leith, his supporters will no doubt hold him to this.
