Camden closures

December 07 2009
The Council responds Last issue we printed a letter from Frank Dobson, MP, voicing his concerns about hostel closures in Camden. Mr Dobson described Camden's housing consultation as "very faulty", and criticised their closure of several hostels, including those at Holmes Road, Mount Pleasant and Gray's Inn Road. "At a time of rising unemployment and repossessions, would a Council that cares be closing and selling off accommodation for the homeless?" he asked. For this issue we approached Camden council to get a response to Mr Dobson's concerns. The housing department released a statement to The Pavement saying: "The Council currently has a substantial number of unfilled hostel places. A number of hostels are being considered for closure including some for single people that would require a large amount of money to bring them up to proper standards. "Anyone in these hostels seeking hostel accommodation will be able to go to a hostel in better condition. They would also be supported to move on to other types of housing if they wish. Camden Council is committed to working with all residents in the hostels being considered for closure and will discuss with them individually their re-housing preferences. Demand from homeless people has fallen in recent years. "However, we can procure temporary accommodation quickly should there be an unexpected surge in demand in the future." * We will continue to monitor developments in Camden's hostel closure programme. If you have had any experiences with closures in Camden, get in touch.
