Kevin and Alex, who both did so much for the Pavement, are the reality behind the stats. Someone who sleeps rough has an average age of 47. Life expectancy in the UK is 81.

From The Ground Up (FTGU) reporter Kevin Headley died on 5 May. As word got around, people gathered at Kevin’s Big Issue selling spot in Hackney Wick and showed off his last invention, a hot water bottle backpack.

We also lost our lovely Glasgow colleague, Wee Alex. Alex Withers took lots of photos for the Pavement, told some great stories in our podcasts and came along to the group for over a year.

FTGU reporter colleague McGinlay remembers Kevin with this poem:

Kept on loving and you kept on giving
Each act of kindness was your living
Very focused, always driven
In trials and errors, all forgiven
Never losing, progressively winning
Heart on your sleeve, love in your eyes
Encouraging each soul who passed you by
And who dares to forget your big generous heart?
Definitely felt that from the start
Legend, activist, supporter, friend
Each spark of your light helps hearts to mend
Your praises on earth and in heaven will never end.

 

An annual service remembering people who have died homeless in London is held every November at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
