TV production company asked to leave a day centre in Southhampton after they turned up uninvited

The TV production company which made the controversial documentary Benefits Street is now turning its attention to the homeless community, it has emerged.

Researchers from Love Productions, who made Benefits Street for Channel 4, were asked to leave a day centre in Southhampton yesterday after they turned up uninvited to try to talk to homeless migrants.

A senior figure at the Two Saints day centre told Inside Housing: “I had our day centre manager ringing us today saying that they [Love Productions] were around, they were in there, they were basically not invited. They have come in and they have been asked to leave.”

Love Productions is researching a potential follow up with the working title 'Immigration Street' which will focus on Derby Road in Southampton, an area which where many new migrants to the UK now live.

Benefits Street was accused by many of demonising people on benefits, and a petition calling for it to be scrapped attracted some 61, 354 signatures. Many accused the filmmakers of not being honest with the people they filmed about how the footage would be used.

However Channel 4 has defended the series, which pulled in high ratings, claiming it opened up the debate about welfare.
