Edinburgh admits backlog

May 11 2014
Council plead six-week delay – until media interest

Council chiefs in Scotland’s capital city are struggling to deal with a six-week backlog in processing homeless applications, it has emerged.

The delay came to light when a mother who had suffered domestic abuse and had been left homeless since February grew frustrated and called the Edinburgh Evening News.

She had been told that the backlog meant the council would be unable to process her case for a further month or provide her with the identity number – known as a EdIndex -– which would mean she was able to apply for council or housing association properties.

But within hours of the Evening News contacting the council about her case, she was sent a number and can now try for a house.

A council spokesman said there had been an ‘exceptionally high demand’ for housing in Scotland’s capital and that extra resources would now be allocated to the housing team to help them deal with the backlog.
