Right to buy ‘needs re-think’

Nearly 40 per cent of all council flats sold under the Right to Buy in England are now being rented out privately, according to research by Inside Housing.

The figures were released by 91 councils under the Freedom of Information Act, and come as the government is about to offer the right to buy to a further 1.3million housing association tenants.

The research showed more than half the ex-council flats in six areas are now being let privately.

What’s more, many councils, desperate to find housing are actually renting back the properties they used to own at market rates in order to provide accommodation for homeless families and individuals.

Some ex-local authority homes in London are advertised on Zoopla for more than four times the average social rent.

The number of households living in the private rented sector has more than doubled in the last 10 years, and almost a fifth of homeless applications come from people whose private let didn’t work out.

The National Housing Federation said it was working with the government to find alternatives to its Right to Buy scheme.
