More than a number

February 01 2025

a poem from Sinead Bennett

Number 653,104,

a number in the night, of which we can’t be sure.

A human rights crisis, a dignity denied,

can you remember any, who prematurely died?

Civil liberties violated, I wonder where they go

the untold stories of lost souls, who now we’ll never know

Did you see him as you passed, did you stop or walk on by?

You are number 653,104 to him, who simply didn’t even say “hi”.

Empty shoes now sit in rows of people who once were,

A homeless man, yet a man nonetheless, the fortgotten one, the blur.

Love shall cease to whisper, instead radiate like the sun,

if out of the shadows, the silence of good people will now become undone

Raise your privilege, use your voice, change the world of all that be,

and run to the man with open arms, the one you forgot to see.
