Scottish government publishes homeless stats

May 05 2010
Applicants are down overall, but rose in the latter half of the year

The Scottish Government published its annual homelessness statistics in March revealing that there were an estimated 28,862 applications for homelessness assistance between April and September 2009, down 2 per cent on the previous year. However, the number of applicants assessed as homeless between April and September 2009 increased by 1 per cent since the same period in 2008.

There were also increases in the proportion of homeless applicants accorded priority that reflects local authorities' progress towards the commitment of abolishing the priority needs test by 2012.

The statistics are designed to report on the operation of homeless persons legislation in Scotland and give an overview of the numbers of homeless applications in Scotland, the assessment and accommodation offered by local authorities and the reasons for homelessness.
