Residents ‘evicted by Christmas’

US-based landlords want to raise rents by up to 400 per cent

Tenants of the New Era estate in London’s Hoxton district have raised fears they could be evicted by Christmas after the estate’s new owners, US-based Westbrook Partners, went back on their promise not to raise rents again until 2016.

According to the Guardian, the company plans to renovate the estate and introduce market-level rents, taking some flats from £600 a month to around £2,400.

The group are hoping to raise awareness of their struggle, like the E15 campaigners in Newham, who occupied vacant East London flats in protest at plans to demolish a housing estate.
