Christian kitchen made homeless... again

A London soup kitchen that serves three-course meals every night has to move out by 31 May

A London soup kitchen that has been serving up hot meals to homeless and vulnerable people for more than 25 years is being made homeless.

The Christian Kitchen serves three-course meals to over 60 homeless people a night, 365 nights a year. But their landlords, Branches Hostel in Forest Road, Walthamstow, have asked them to move out by 31 May, so they can run cooking classes. They were formerly removed from a site by the council and for the past four years they have used the kitchens at Branches Hostel.

Sadly, Christian Kitchen are ?not the only such charity to be experiencing problems. Last November, the Dover Soup Kitchen had been running for over 25 ?years when it was evicted by Dover District Council. The council said it was closed due to complaints, but admitted that most came from just two people.

The Help the Homeless soup kitchen in Mansfield was recently given two weeks to quit their location by Mansfield District Council after serving homeless locals for 15 years.

The chairman of Christian Kitchen, Norman Coe, confirmed that they’ve still yet to find a new home. He said: “I believe the voluntary work of Christian Kitchen is vital and needs to continue. The guests who come are sometimes in need of urgent medical attention and we are able to direct them to appropriate help sometimes by calling an ambulance or direct to a Polyclinic or A&E.” TB screening is also often available.

A Waltham Forest Council spokesperson told the Pavement: “The loss of any provision that supports the homeless in our borough is of course a great shame. We are committed to supporting those most in need.”
