Virtual people with a real following A blog about a virtual homeless family has become a real-life internet sensation. Robin Burkinshaw, a games design student at Anglia Ruskin University, created Alice and her rather aggressive father Kev, placed them in a park with no money, and watched what happened. Sims 3, the "strategic life simulation video game", allows players to loosely define their characters, but free will and personality traits subsequently take over. Kev and Alice, who is at school and works in a supermarket, interact with the other semi-autonomous characters in the game's living neighbourhood and encounter the random kindness - and unpleasantness - of strangers.
